Just 57 percent of American households headed by someone age 55 to 64 held money in a retirement specific account in 2022, according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances. That means 43 percent of people approaching retirement have nothing set aside in a 401(k), IRA, or similar account, and the picture gets murkier once you look at the balances of those who do.
